History

The Musée de l’école publique (the School Museum), in Saint-Clar, can be found next to the post office.

The museum's history began in January 1981, the centenary of the provision of state schools in France.

A handful of dedicated volunteers decided to bring together in one place artefacts and memories of the country’s schools. The Friends of the School Museum charity was born and the museum was housed in the old school buildings.

Now completely refurbished, the museum houses a rich collection of over 7,000 objects, some of which are very rare. The permanent galleries will guide you through the major steps in State education, as it was in the 1950s. A modern museum design supported by original equipment, artefacts and illustrated information panels will enthral every visitor. Linger a while in the classroom of the Thirties, faithfully reconstructed. Sit at a “proper” old desk and dip your pen in purple ink to copy the wise words written on the blackboard.

And if you wish, and are brave enough, take the old School Certificate tests! (In French, of course!)

The ;useum also arranges temporary exhibitions.

Groups are welcome outside opening hours by appointment. Activities can be organized for children, who can try on the school uniform of days gone by.
